The Beijing Botanical Garden (now the National Botanical Garden) is rich in rare plant resources. Its rare plant scenic spots are mainly concentrated in the north and south parks. The following are some of the main rare plant scenic spots:

The rare plant scenic spot in the North Garden

Conservation Area for Rare Plant Metasequoia glyptostroboides

As the largest conservation area for the rare plant Metasequoia glyptostroboides in northern China, this place showcases rare plants such as Metasequoia glyptostroboides, providing visitors with the opportunity to observe these ancient plants up close.

Peony Garden

It showcases over 5,500 peonies of more than 300 varieties, featuring nine major color series of peonies including red, white, blue, green, yellow, pink, purple, black and bicolor. Among them, there are many rare varieties, such as the Eight Lions with large flowers and the golden Wheel with golden color.

Perennial Garden

At present, in Beijing, only the Perennial Garden of the National Botanical Garden (North Garden) displays the rare and precious ornamental plant Davidia involucrata, which is unique to China, to the public. Davidia involucrata, a relict plant from the Tertiary period, is known as the “Chinese Dove Tree”. When it blooms, its white bracts sway in the wind, resembling a flock of doves spreading their wings and about to take flight.

Tree area

On the north side of the tree area, tourists can enjoy rare plants such as the hybrid liriodendron chinense. The flowers of Liriodendron chinensis are very similar to those of tulips, and it is also called “tulip on the tree”. Its leaves are also unique, resembling the magua worn by men in old China, thus it is named “magua tree”.

Exhibition Greenhouse

The South Garden Exhibition Greenhouse includes 9 exhibition rooms such as the Carnivorous Plant room and the Aquatic Plant Room, collecting and displaying over 2,000 species of tropical and subtropical plants. Here, not only are there “national gift” plants such as the Bodhi tree on display, but also rare plants introduced and collected from abroad. The aquatic plant room offers a year-round view of water lilies and Aquamarine plants with huge leaves.

Specialized Gardens with distinctive features

There are 15 characteristic specialized gardens in the South Garden, and among these specialized gardens, there are no shortage of traces of rare plants. Tourists can enjoy all kinds of rare and unique plants of various shapes here.
