Regulations on carrying pets when traveling in Beijing

Jun 19 2025

When traveling in Beijing, pets must strictly abide by relevant regulations, covering aspects such as access to public places, document processing, transportation, and special requirements of scenic spots. The following are the specific regulations and precautions:

First, restrictions on public places

Urban parks and public green Spaces

According to the “Regulations on Dog Keeping in Beijing”, pets are prohibited from entering places such as markets, stores, parks and public green Spaces. For instance, popular scenic spots such as Nan Yuan Forest Wetland Park and Nanhaizi Park explicitly prohibit the bringing of pets.

Exceptional cases

Some scenic spots or parks may open pet-friendly areas, but advance confirmation is required. For example, the Jinhai Lake Scenic Area allows pets to enter the park, but they need to sign a commitment letter and use a leash. Yanqing Yuechong Huaxi Park is the first free pet-friendly park in the city, featuring zoned activity areas.

Second, documents and epidemic prevention requirements

Dog registration certificate

According to the “Regulations on Dog Keeping in Beijing”, each household in the key management areas is limited to keeping one dog. They need to obtain a dog keeping registration certificate and undergo regular annual inspections.

Immunity certificate

Dogs only need to be regularly vaccinated against rabies and hold valid immunization certificates. Taking pets out of the country requires online declaration through Beijing Customs and completion of clinical examination.

Third, traffic and travel regulations

Public transportation restrictions

Pets are prohibited on public transportation such as subways and buses. Some taxi or ride-hailing platforms offer pet-specific car services, but advance reservation and compliance with platform rules are required.

Self-driving precautions

When driving by yourself, make sure your pet is safe and use a pet safety belt or an airline carrier. Some parking lots in scenic spots may require that pets be kept well-ventilated when in their vehicles and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.

Fourth, special requirements for scenic spots

Pet-friendly scenic area

Nan Shiyang Grand Canyon: Pets are allowed in the park. Shuttle bus service is provided, but they need to wear a leash and clean up their feces.

Laoshan Urban Leisure Park: Pets are allowed in, but they must be led throughout the journey.

Jinyu Liuli Cultural and Creative Industry Park: Pets are allowed in the park, but fierce dogs and large dogs are prohibited.

Pet-free scenic area

Starting from April 1, 2023, Jingdong Grand Canyon has completely banned pets from entering the park. Most other scenic spots follow similar regulations.

Fifth, suggestions for civilized pet keeping

Comply with the regulations of the scenic area

Check the policies of the scenic area in advance to avoid being denied entry or fined for bringing pets in violation of regulations.

Safety and Hygiene

Use a leash throughout the journey to prevent pets from disturbing others or entering dangerous areas.

Carry a pet poop bag with you and clean up your pet’s feces in time.

Special caution should be exercised with fierce or large dogs. Some scenic spots explicitly prohibit their entry.

Emergency preparedness

Carry common pet medicines, water bottles and food to ensure your pet’s health and comfort during the journey.
